AnnotationThe aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a memory notebook in decreasing problematic behaviour of four persons with Alzheimer's disease living in a residential care home. After data analysis, the findings revealed that the memory notebook provided residents with a sense of security regarding their present surroundings and reassurance that important facts about their lives and families had been recorded. In addition, the notebook provided a line of communication between staff, families and residents, that might not otherwise have been possible. The study concluded that use of a memory notebook also appeared to be effective in reducing anger, agitation and confusion; engaging residents who had withdrawn from all activities to participate in activities again; and, in conjunction with instructions and demonstrations by a family caregiver, reducing physical aggressiveness during bathtime.
