AnnotationThis study compared two methods of nutrition assessment available to indicate potential malnutrition in the older population in the United States (US): the DETERMINE checklist developed as part of the Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI) and the semi-quantitative Willet Food Frequency instrument (SFFQ). A nutritional inadequacy score was derived from the SFFQ. The participants in the study were 90 older people in Nevada. Findings indicate that nutrition problems relevant for the older population include: excessive body mass index (BMI) and subsequent health risks associated with obesity; low fibre intake; and high cholesterol intake associated with a higher risk of heart disease.
