AnnotationThe Elderly Nutrition Program (ENP) Titles IIIC and VI) of the Older Americans Act of 1965 was designed to provide congregate and home-delivered meals to older people, and, partly, to address nutritional inadequacies. However, older people participating in such programmes have been found to be at malnutrition risk when screened by an instrument devised by the National Screening Initiative (NSI). The aim of this short project was to develop a model screening and assessment protocol using a modified version of the Checklist, the NSI nutrition screening instrument; to identify levels of malnutrition; and to identify nutrition-related services needed in a select population of older adults receiving meals services. Findings revealed 68% of congregate and 89% of home delivered meals participants to be at moderate or high malnutrition risk. Those at risk were assessed further, and it was found that the most frequent needs were nutrition counselling, drug and nutrient counselling, and dental health needs. (AKM).
