Annotation | This article describes the development and implementation of an innovative seminar to train primary care physicians in the diagnosis and long-term care of people with dementia in Texas, United States (US). A secondary objective was provide communities with a professional source of information on dementia issues. The intensive seminar was attended by 28 primary care physicians, and its effectiveness was assessed with a pre- and post-seminar questionnaire and telephone interviews. Although no significant gains in knowledge from seminar participation were demonstrated, participants reported feeling more comfortable in patient education settings. The article concludes that intensive seminars or workshops appear to be an effective and efficient means of disseminating geriatric training to primary care physicians and community health care providers. |
