The community study of psychiatric disorders in elderly from the Indian subcontinent living in Bradford | Author(s) | Ajit Shah |
Journal title | International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, vol 13, no 2, February 1998 |
Pages | p 129 |
Keywords | Asian people ; Mental disorder ; Diagnosis ; Communication skills ; Methodology ; Bradford. |
Annotation | While the study referred to makes an important contribution to transcultural geriatric psychiatry, no supportive evidence was provided to favour the assumption that Gujarati and Punjabi elders understood Hindi. Hindi and Gujarati are similar languages, but with subtle differences: many apparently similar words have very different meanings in the two languages. Factors such as this may explain poor agreement between the Geriatric Mental State (GMS) examination and the psychiatrist's ICD-9 diagnosis: the psychiatrist spoke Gujarati. The author of this letter suggests that it is possible to develop instruments in Gujarati to measure cognitive impairment. |
