AnnotationThis study analysed the impact of illness on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of a representative sample of community-living older people aged 76 years and over, participating in the longitudinal population study of older people in Gothenburg, Sweden. The aim was to identify the HRQL profile related to diagnoses common at this age. Findings revealed that HRQL of the total sample was good, but was impaired by illness, such as anginal pain, urinary incontinence, locomotor and mental disorders. Generally, HRQL decreased with multi-morbidity. In the emotional and social dimensions, however, HRQL was little influenced until health was severely impaired. The studied diagnoses did not explain more than up to one third of the decrease in quality of life, which suggests that factors other than health have an impact or that ill health is considered a acceptable component of ageing.
