AnnotationThe aim of this Canadian study was to describe the personal goals of older people and to see if these aspirations varied according to the participants' perception of various characteristics of their life: subjective health, self-determination, environmental mastery, competence, meaning of life, satisfaction with life since retirement, with the present and the use of time, and expectations about the future. Using a sentence completion technique, 708 older participants expressed personal aspirations. Analysis revealed two goal profiles. Aspirations centred on self-preservation were associated with poor self-rated physical health, being burdened by difficulties, lack of meaning to life, dissatisfaction with life, and negative expectations for the future. Aspirations of self-development and interest in the well-being of others were associated with feelings of well-being in later life. Development of meaningful personal goals was discussed as a new intervention approach with older people.
