Annotation | In Zimbabwe, AIDS has had a devastating effect on family structure. Older people left behind by sons and daughters who die from AIDS have to care for their grandchildren. Under normal circumstances, adult children are expected to care for their elderly parents, however, with an increasing number of deaths from AIDS, the number of adult children in a position to support their parents is diminishing. This article describes the current situation in Zimbabwe, and calls for measures to strengthen the extended family network in order to ensure that care will be available for older people. |
