AnnotationThis paper was presented at the plenary session of the Second Global Conference of the International Federation on Ageing (IFA), Jerusalem, Israel, 17-21 September 1995. It discusses some of the major trends in the development of services for older people in developed countries, as well as variations on approaches to service developments. The implications of some major trends for older people living in the community are addressed, and the degree to which models of service provision developed in developed countries are applicable to countries in the developing world is discussed. The paper then examines some of the factors contributing to the low rates of institutionalisation prevalent among older people in Israel. It concludes with some remarks on the issue of intergenerational equality.
