AnnotationThis publication focuses on everyday relationships between older people in homes, their relatives, friends, and care staff, by means of a developmental project involving group discussions. Analysis of the project's findings points to useful information on : awareness raising; relationships between relatives and staff; roles and expectations; visitors and visiting; communication; views of residential care by residents, relatives and staff; residential care and practice; complaints, suggestions and advocacy; partnership and involvement of family members; and user feedback. The materials for training and development (with 'Key messages') aim to reinforce the findings, foster better understanding between relatives and staff, promote competency in training by linking material to the S/NVQ Award in Care, and encourage development of policy and practice guidelines in residential care with regard to relatives. This material is in the form of structured exercises and notes for background reading, simulation exercises (role plays), and instruments, e.g. questionnaires. Reference is made to regulations and reports guiding practice, including the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) 'A better home life'.
