AnnotationIn this study, participant observation was used to describe the daily activities, patients and staff in a geriatric assessment and rehabilitation unit in a hospital in Montreal, Quebec, focusing on staff-patient communication. The first three chapters describes the unit, its patients and staff. Chapter four looks at the goals and outcomes of activities in the unit, focusing on the way in which daily routines provide staff with information to assess activities of daily living (ADL). Communication between patients, their families and staff are examined in the following chapter, and the final two chapters looks at the codes used for communication, such as the use of uniforms to indicate role and status, and the way in which paralanguage, such as tone of voice, provides insight into attitudes and conflict.
