AnnotationThis book reviews and summarises the scientific literature on the physiological changes of ageing and how regular physical activity affects the ageing process. Part one describes the demographics of ageing, including individual differences in biological age and life span, and the impact of gender, socioeconomic influences and physical activity to those differences. It also describes the molecular, microstructural and cellular changes that occur with ageing, and looks at the effect of physical activity on those changes. Part two explores interactions between regular physical activity and health in older people, covering diseases of the cardiorespiratory system, musculoskeletal disease, metabolic health and well-being. The final part examines the economic and social consequences of an ageing society in the United States (US), and looks at the costs and benefits of greater physical activity.
