AnnotationThe results of a pilot study which implemented a new carers' stress and caregiving burden assessment for Crossroads Wales is described. The aim of the study was to provide information for individual care planning and the allocation of care hours, and to provide an effective assessment of carers' ability to provide or continue to provide care for their dependant that could be used by local authorities in meeting the requirements of the Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1996. Three Welsh Crossroads schemes participated in the study with a total of 65 carers being assessed, including the completion of a Carers' Questionnaire. Findings revealed that the carers received few formal support services and little informal support. Problems experienced in everyday caregiving included communication problems, confusion problems, self-care problems and verbal and physical aggression. Results from the questionnaires indicated high levels of personal distress and life upset. The impact of caregiving was great, with 88% of carers worrying about leaving their dependant on their own, 56% having their sleep regularly disrupted, and 66% finding it difficult to take a few hours break.
