AnnotationIn most western societies, a common policy in the care of older people is to promote independent living and community support. During recent decades, there has also been a shift from institutional to independent care in the community for older people with impaired mobility who need access to transport that is adapted to their impairment. The aim of this study was to describe usage of the special transportation service for older people in Sweden and to analyse whether causal relationships exist between the number of trips using the service and background variables such as health, assistance needs and social network. A LISREL (LInear Structural RELationships) analysis showed that the need for assistance was the major explanatory variable. However, individual factors such as lifestyle and adaptability also affected demand.
