AnnotationIn this article, the results of an empirical study amongst nurses on dealing with patient autonomy in nursing homes are presented and discussed. Criteria for good care, formulated by the Dutch Association for Nursing Home Care, were the starting point of the research. The study found that, in nursing homes, living up to the criteria relating to respect for autonomy is problematic. Some problems may be explained by the fact that many nursing home residents were insufficiently competent to be autonomous. Too much emphasis on respect for autonomy may conflict with other aspects of care. The study concluded that the present understanding of the norm should be modified to fit the nursing home context.
