Annotation | A range of literature pertinent to the occupational needs of persons with dementia is reviewed. The dearth of information on the general function of occupation in human beings is noted and recognised as a deficit in the theoretical underpinning of occupational science and therapy. The development of health and social service awareness of occupational need in older people with dementia is traced from its initial concerns with engagement in activities in residential settings. Current practice emphasises psychological well-being through an individualised, person-centred approach to participation in occupations. The need for in-depth action research into matters of occupational need and provision is urged, and a range of evaluation tools to facilitate such research is identified. |
