Annotation | This paper discusses the housing choices made in later life, with specific reference to the role of health. Research was conducted in Newcastle upon Tyne with the primary aim of gaining a better understanding of the processes and factors that influence where older people live and the views they themselves hold on moving house. In-depth interviews were conducted with 40 older people from different parts of the city, which provided a rich source of information encompassing the ageing milieu. Life histories were recorded to enable any decisions made in later life to be placed in the context of the whole life experience. These qualitative approaches allowed individuals to express their feelings and perceptions regarding their home and their views on moving house in later life. The extent to which health emerged from the interviews as a contributing factor to the decision to stay or move is evaluated. Although health was found to be an important consideration, very rarely was it cited as the only reason for moving or staying put. This paper illustrates how health combines with many other factors to produce an outcome, and highlights the heterogeneity of older people. |
