Annotation | This article discusses the contribution of a psychodynamic approach within occupational therapy for a population of older adults with mental health problems. There is a paucity of literature in this specific field, but this exploration aimed to identify links between psychodynamic theories, occupational therapy and issues surrounding older people in society. The article concludes that a psychodynamic approach is useful in the field of occupational therapy and in other professions by accepting the continuity of the self into older age. It increases the therapist's personal understanding of self and of the patients through a knowledge of motives, needs and impulses. These points are relevant to many other professions working with older people. |
