Annotation | The process of discharge planning is a complicated and intricate business when focused on those with complex needs, such as older people. Even when it appears to be a relatively straightforward situation, complications can and do arise. This paper explores some of the reasons for this, including issues of organisation and power, in order to try to gain an appreciation of the extent of the difficulties that may occur and to consider what approaches might usefully be developed in an attempt to resolve some of these seemingly intractable problems. The paper reflects the particular situation in the United Kingdom (UK), but some of the issues concerned, such as the division of health and social services, the problems of interdisciplinary working, and differences in power and status, are not unique to the UK. |
