Annotation | This paper reviews methods of health care quality assessment relevant to the care of older people in the United Kingdom (UK), with particular reference to nursing. It notes a shift in evaluation from ex post to ex ante forms, reflecting the increasing involvement of managers in setting objectives and requiring services to be evaluated through outcome measures that relate to pre-set objectives. Ex post methods of quality assessment discussed are peer review and case presentation. Ex ante forms include: outcome measures of disease, pain, depression and anxiety; generic and domain specific outcome measures; patient complaints; audits; clinical indicators and tracers; criteria maps and critical paths; and measures of nurse performance. |
