AnnotationLittle research has considered the well-being of family caregivers when an older member has moved into an institution. Based on Lazarus and Folkman's middle range theory of stress and coping, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to identify factors associated with the psychological well-being of the caregivers of older people with dementia who are in institutions. A sample of 220 primary caregivers was recruited through long-term care institutions in Quebec, Canada. Subjects were interviewed at home using standardised questionnaires measuring: objective and subjective stressors related to the health condition of older people and to the long-term care setting; social support from the social network and health care workers; coping strategies; and multiple indicators of psychological well-being. Cognitive appraisal in older people of memory dysfunctional behaviours, the frequency of depressive dysfunctional behaviours, a low level of social support and a high level of conflict from the social network, as well as affective regulation ( a coping strategy) were predictors of caregivers' psychological distress. The results provide guidance for the development of interventions aimed at this group of caregivers.
