AnnotationThe investigation of seemingly natural subjects (and objects) has sought to discover the principles of societal construction. Deconstruction of the `natural' categories of sex, sexuality, beauty and madness have revealed a socially constructed `nature' based on relations of unequal power. It is in this milieu that the feminist critique of age and ageing has emerged. This paper provides an overview of the emerging critique of ageing as a societal construction. It investigates the engendered effects of societal attitudes towards ageing and the multi-layered oppressions that face older people in society. It argues that there needs to be a recognition of older people as an integral part of society and the promotion of a positive image of ageing needs to be a focal point of future theory and policy. Women's positions of `double' and `multiple jeopardy' need to be recognised both by theoreticians and policy makers. The media need to take responsibility for promoting positive images of ageing and the role of older people in Australian society.
