Annotation | Gerontology research in Australia is conducted in many relevant and necessary areas, that is, health and social issues. Questions are raised about the main foci for these studies, in particular the uneven emphasis on health rather than social motivations. This article reports on a survey conducted among 34 organisations at different locations throughout Australia. The survey aimed to gain information about the interests of these organisations, and about the benefits to target populations. Interpretation of the results from the 16 replies showed a substantial emphasis on health issues of older people rather than the social aspects. Suggestions were made about a new shift towards Australian gerontologists increasing their social research activities, and about the introduction of more extensive studies to evaluate the role of gerontologists in Australia. The authors suggest that this kind of audit should be conducted on a regular basis so that researchers become aware of the activities of other workers. |
