Annotation | Service provision in the 1990s is often based on cost-effective interventions and the encouragement of community care. However, this emphasis on providing intervention within the community requires an added emphasis on resources for caregivers who facilitate community care. During the mid-late 1980s, a substantial amount of research was conducted into the psychological impact of providing care for a friend or relative with dementia. Despite this research, the factors associated with depression are still not well understood. A review of the literature is presented and it is recommended that further research should be conducted to determine clearly the factors associated with depression amongst caregivers of people with dementia. This may enable health care staff to develop methods to reduce the prevalence of depression in this group. |
