Annotation | Concerns about population in Africa have tended to focus on the relatively high rates of fertility and mortality. That most African populations are ageing - albeit at slower rates than the rest of the developed world - has been overlooked. This report summarises the major demographic aspects affecting the ageing the South African population. It highlights several socio-economic characteristics that affect well-being of older people: life expectancy and health; urbanisation and education; marital status and living arrangements; and employment and subsistence. Given the emphasis on human rights and policy reform in South Africa, its older people are likely to experience a greater sense of empowerment.(RH). |
