Annotation | The Direct Payments Act, which came into force on 1 April 1997, allows local authorities to give some people cash payments, instead of arranging the social services they have assessed them as needing. Those people who receive direct payments will be able to use the money to purchase the care they need, allowing them to say how and when their care is provided. This guide in its draft form - for which there was a very short period for comments to be made - offers advice to people who are getting direct payments from their local authority social services departments. |
