AnnotationThis summarises Department of Social Security Research report no 72, which describes findings from two retirement surveys commissioned by the DSS and undertaken by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) in 1988/89 and 1994. The surveys examine the circumstances of a representative sample of people aged 55-69 when first interviewed, and their partners, and at what happened in the transition to retirement. The analyses were commissioned by the DSS and carried out by the Institute for Fiscal Studies and Age Concern Institute of Gerontology (ACIOG). This summary considers the report's findings on retirement and labour market activity, and disability and caring. It also looks at financial aspects of retirement: income dynamics; non-state pensions; financial assets; and housing wealth. (RH).
