AnnotationThis document sets out the findings from a statistical interview survey which aimed to validate the findings from an earlier qualitative study conducted by the Hanover Housing Association. The aims of the survey were to establish the main information sources on housing options for older people, their relatives and friends, and to assess reactions to information about extra care sheltered housing. Interviews were held in 80 locations in England with people who advised or helped an older person (165), and with people aged 70 years and older (164). Findings showed that 51% of the older interviewees received some help from their families, friends or neighbours. Their main advisers were their children and their neighbours. The majority of older people (60%) said they would definitely not consider moving to a different type of accommodation as they grew older, the main reasons being the upheaval and loss of independence. Information on housing were mainly sought from local authority housing departments, although 21% of older people said they did not know where to get such information. 30% said they would be interested in extra care sheltered housing, although the cost and loss of independence were of some concern.
