Annotation | This guide has been researched and written with Department of Health (DoH) and Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) funding, and will be published in the NHS Estates series, Health facilities notes. It aims to promote consistent, high-quality design standards which facilitate good care, and to encourage designed-in adaptability, avoiding the imposition of an inflexible uniformity. It is written primarily for architects and other building professionals, owners and managers of homes, voluntary organisations representing older people, their families and carers, and anyone else with an interest in good practice in design of care homes. It provides background information on the needs of the client group, covers various stages in the design process from the broad allocation of space to the detailed consideration of facilities, and gives guidance on external works and landscaping. This guide also complements existing guidance on standards, particularly the Centre for Policy on Ageing's (CPA) 'Home life: a code of practice for residential care' (1984), and 'A better home life: code of practice for residential and nursing home care' (1996). |
