AnnotationMetabolic syndrome X is a combination of modifiable (physiological, morphological, lifestyle) and non-modifiable (genotype, sex, age and race) risk factors that are likely precursors to non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, two of the main causes of death of post-menopausal women. This article describes the components of syndrome X, explains why women should be concerned about it, and delineates risk factors. Also discussed are sociological elements related to the syndrome, psychosocial implications of the condition, and suggested treatments. The article concludes that if post-menopausal women can be educated about the dangers of this condition, successful prevention and treatment are more likely.
