Annotation | Although medical progress provides more ways of fighting disease in old age, it is at a very high cost which may give people a little more time but does not necessarily provide a good quality of life. The author puts forward three fundamental issues that are not discussed very much, and certainly not by politicians. Firstly, what do we think should be our attitude toward older people as a group and giving up resources to them? Secondly, do we believe that it is valid to use group identification as a standard, or do we believe we should only think about individuals? Thirdly, what do we think about the modernisation of ageing and endless medical progress to improve older people's health outcomes? The author concludes that even if US health care expenditure levelled off, today's older people would still be healthier than those in previous generations. (RH). |
