AnnotationThis book provides information on the various types of dementia, and the assessment, treatment and management of the disorder. The first part defines the various types of dementia within the context of ageing and abnormal ageing, including vascular dementia, Alzheimer's disease and multi-infarct dementia. The difficulties in identifying dementia in older people with learning disabilities are explored, and the relationship between Down's syndrome and Alzheimer's disease is discussed. In the second part, the assessment, management and treatment of dementia are discussed. The final part focuses on research into various aspects of dementia, including clinical trials, biochemical and anatomical studies, and studies on stress in caregivers. Future directions for people with dementia are outlined, including screening, genetics and drug treatment.
