AnnotationNutritional studies in developing countries tend to focus on women of reproductive age and children, and little is known about the nutritional status and diet of the older populations. This study documented the diet and nutritional status of 278 healthy, older Zimbabweans in rural and urban areas. Factors such as age, gender, income and level of education, which might influence nutritional status, were examined, and a range of biochemical, anthropometric and haematological measurements, which may reflect nutritional status, were established. Findings showed that the staple diet was maize meal and vegetables. The frequency of eating meat, milk, bread and fried food varied with income and education and declined with age. The study concluded that the diet and nutritional status of the group were influenced by area of residence, age, income and educational level.
