AnnotationThe association between dietary intake and dental status and effects on quality of life and survival of older people is unclear. This study evaluated the relationship between a functional measure of dental status (FDS), the intake of nutrients and mortality in a cohort of older people aged between 70 and 75 in Brescia, northern Italy. Using multiple logistic regression, the study found a significant and independent association between the dental status and intake of micronutrients, but not macronutrients. The use of dentures was found to counteract detrimental effects on nutrient intake. In older women, both inadequate dental status and folate intake were found to be significant and independent predictors of mortality in a multivariate analysis based on nutritional parameters. However, dental status did not remain an independent predictor of mortality in a multivariate model.
