AnnotationThe literature on inhibition and ageing has grown steadily in the wake of Hasher and Zacks' inhibitory theory of cognitive ageing (Working memory, comprehension and aging: a review and a new view; in: Bower, "The psychology of learning and motivation", Academic Press, 1988). Not all of the findings support the notion of an age-related inhibitory decline, and some refinement of the theory is now required. This article aims: to evaluate the role of inhibitory mechanisms in selective attention and ageing; to provide an evaluation of inhibition as a theoretical concept in theories of cognitive ageing, with a specific focus on attention and ageing; and to consider the more general problem of evaluating progress in theory development.
