Annotation | The notion of 'successful ageing' was probably first described by Aristotle. He used the term 'eugeria', which he defined as living a long and happy life, without suffering, and without being a burden to others. This short article about Jeanne Calment, who died on 4 August 1997 aged 122 years and was considered to be the oldest human being in history, considers the reasons for her longevity; she may well have achieved eugeria. |
