Annotation | Previous studies of the correlates of depression among women have not generally been based on adequate midlife samples or precision in the specification of marital status categories. This study, based on data from the first wave of the Health and Retirement Survey (HRS) 1991, with respondents aged between 45 and 65 years, aimed to address these deficiencies. Findings indicate that married women were less likely to report symptoms of depression than their unmarried counterparts. The mental health benefits of marriage were greater for men than for women. Other variables, such as marital satisfaction, self-rated health, and employment status were found to be more powerful predictors of emotional well-being in midlife than marital status as such. The quality of marriage appeared to affect depressive symptoms more strongly for women than men. |
