Annotation | This study investigated the relationships of gender role orientations (feminine, masculine and androgynous) with self-perceived health status, health behaviour and qualitative well-being experience in a sample of community-dwelling older women in a central midwestern city in the United States (US). Instruments used were the Bem Sex Role Inventory, the Seniors' Lifestyle Inventory, and the Integration Inventory. Findings revealed the greatest number of significant positive correlations with the feminine orientation; androgeny was significantly linked with qualitative well-being and with a positive self-comparison in relation to peers. Masculinity was positively linked with health behaviour. Findings are interpreted in the light of successful ageing for older women. |
