Annotation | In 1971, fewer than 1 in 5 households in the UK were one person households; by 1991, this had risen to almost 1 in 3. Over the same years in France, the proportion of one-person households increased from 20% to 27%. Living alone is usually associated with older people. The research report here highlights the dramatic increase in one-person living among non-pensioners, where much of the growth is concentrated among the under 40s. (RH). |
