AnnotationThere has been considerable debate about the apparent decline of traditional family life, and about whether the increased emphasis on the individual has weakened family values. Analysis of the British Household Panel Study Data highlights the continuing importance of family life, despite changing patterns in cohabitation, generational changes in gender role ideology, and changes in attitudes towards mothers' employment. Cross-national comparisons were made, using the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), a survey conducted in the UK, Italy, Ireland, the United States and Germany; researchers were able to examine the extent to which family preferences are changing, and to identify distinctive aspects of family life.
