AnnotationThis study aimed to examine the relationship between attitudes toward nursing homes and subsequent nursing home utilisation, and to assess the impact of prior nursing home utilisation on subsequent attitudes in a sample of older Americans in the United States (US). Findings revealed that prior nursing home use did not directly affect subsequent attitudes towards nursing homes, however, having favourable attitudes increased the odds of using subsequent nursing home services, as well as the total nursing home length of stay. The study concluded that planners and policy makers interested in serving the long-term care needs of older people need to recognise the importance of attitudes toward nursing homes as a predictor of subsequent nursing home use.
