AnnotationThis report, prepared by a group of medical experts (chairman: P Kopelman), contains general guidance on the management of overweight and obese patients, and gives specific advice and recommendations for the use of anti-obesity drugs as part of a weight loss programme. A proposal to prohibit the sale or supply of anorectic agents used in the treatment of obesity was considered by the Medicines Commission in 1995. It was decided that such prohibition could detract from the need to tackle obesity. There was also concern about the use of medicines by practitioners who had prescribed them for patients without the knowledge of their GPS (general practitioners). The Department of Health (DoH) therefore asked the Royal College of Physicians to issue guidance on the appropriate use of anti-obesity drugs. (RH).
