Annotation | Since publication of the previous editions of these Guidelines in 1984 and 1990, much has changed, for example, in relation to issues of consent, patient information, multi-centre trials, and the laws on the use of discarded human tissues. There are also new areas of research for health and disease, and changes in public attitude to medical practice. The guidelines are intended to safeguard the interests of patients and healthy volunteers who have agreed to participate in clinical studies, to ensure protection of vulnerable groups such as the mentally disadvantaged, and to ensure that appropriate consent procedures are adhered to. The guidelines give comprehensive, up-to-date advice to members of research ethics committees, and cover most situations which are likely to be encountered. |
