AnnotationThe aim of this book is to provide an extensive discussion of various topics related to mid-life and older women. The first part looks at the historical and theoretical perspectives, focusing on sexism and ageism, historical and cultural images of middle-aged and older women, history of older women in the United States (US), and the social construction of older women. The second part explores economic issues, including the economic status of older women in the US, women in the work force, and retirement. Health, psychological and living issues are discussed in the third part, including life satisfaction and older women, reminiscence, suicidal behaviour, religion and volunteering. In the fourth part, racial, ethnic and demographic issues are explored, looking at American Indian, Asian American, Chinese and rural older women. The final part focuses on women's relationships, including family, friends, siblings, and on women as carers.
