AnnotationSeveral studies have reported high prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders, especially dementia and depression, in residents in nursing homes and similar institutions in developed nations. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of such disorders in two nursing homes in Lagos, Nigeria, in the hope that the information obtained would help policy-makers in preparing for the needs of such homes in the future in other African nations as well. Diagnoses were based on DSM-III-R criteria and AGECAT (computer-generated diagnosis). Results revealed a prevalence rate of psychiatric disorders in 74% of the total study population of 23 residents. The commonest diagnoses were dementia (in eleven of the residents) and depression (in four residents). The study concluded that the prevalence rate was similar to those found in similar institutions in developed nations.
