AnnotationThe effects of supplementation with vitamin D3 (cholocalciferol) and calcium on the frequency of hip and other non-vertebral fractures, identified radiologically, was studied in 3,270 healthy ambulatory older French women (mean age 84). For 18 months, 1634 women received tricalcium phosphate (containing 1.2g elemental calcium) and 20 micrograms of vitamin D3; 1636 women received a double placebo. Serial serum parathyroid hormone and 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations were measured in 142 women and determined the femoral bone mineral density at baseline and after 18 months in 56 women. Among those receiving the supplement, hip fractures were 43% lower and non-vertebral fractures were 32% lower than among those receiving the placebo. Bone density of the proximal femur increased 2.7% in the vitamin D3 calcium group, and decreased 4.6% in the placebo group. Supplementation with vitamin D3 and calcium reduces the risk of hip and other non-vertebral fractures among older women. (RH).
