Employment policies and practices towards older workers France, Germany, Spain and Sweden | Author(s) | Tina Weber, Gill Whitting, Jane Sidaway |
Journal title | Labour Market Trends, April 1997 |
Pages | pp 143-148 |
Keywords | Employment of older people ; Labour economics ; Social policy ; France ; Germany ; Spain ; Sweden. |
Annotation | This article presents the findings from research commissioned by the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE), which considers employer and government policies and practices towards older workers. France, Germany, Spain and Sweden were chosen for this study, because these countries provide contrasting experiences in terms of macro-economic trends, government approaches to intervention in employment policy, the role of labour law and collective agreements in employment regulation, the degree of labour market flexibility, and the type and extent of government measures which are perceived to reflect the position of older workers in the labour market. There is some evidence that targeted policies are working, and would be most effective with smaller companies, which were found to be more likely to wish to retain older workers. |
