AnnotationTwenty older Chinese aged 60 and over participated in semi-structured interviews to find out their beliefs about various aspects of nursing homes in Hong Kong, and how such beliefs are formed. Audio-taped interview data were transcribed, translated and coded for data analysis. Most made negative comments about nursing homes as `dumping grounds', expressing worries about the quality of care, and anticipating problematic relationships with other residents and nurses. Positive aspects mentioned were the provision of general nursing care, the chance to make new friends, and increased social contact. Most views had been formulated from indirect sources, without any previous contact with nursing homes; these mainly reflected stories of neglect or abuse, rather than the positive experiences of nursing home life.
