AnnotationThis descriptive, exploratory study examined older clients' perceptions of individualised health counselling and group wellness sessions offered by public health nurses at a health unit's monthly clinics in Northern Ontario, Canada. The sample comprised 36 older people living independently in the community. Participants reported that individualised health counselling and group wellness sessions provided different kinds of benefits and services. Monitoring of health status, support, and health teaching were valued nursing activities within individualised health counselling. Participants said that group wellness sessions were an effective means of acquiring general knowledge about ageing and lifestyle choices, but this format could not totally meet all their health care needs. Regardless of clinic type, blood pressure monitoring was viewed as important. Recognition of older clients' perceptions is crucial in planning and implementing programmes that are appropriate and acceptable for improving the quality of life for this age group. (RH).
