AnnotationWhat makes older people follow particular dietary patterns, and which factors constrain their choice? This article examines research on the social, personal, psychological, physiological, economic and educational factors which may influence older people's food choice. Use of the term "food choice" refers to the set of conscious or unconscious decisions made by an older person at the point of purchase, the point of consumption, or at any point in between. The author concludes that the main influences on choice and dietary quality in old age are a combination of physical and mental health, and class and income. Since multiple causes are usually responsible for serious nutrition problems, it is usual for malnutrition to have multiple causes in older people in the UK. Tackling structural constraints on food choice requires a more comprehensive public health approach, with more nutrition and health education aimed at older consumers. (RH).
